Steve E. Georgas, CPP, CSSP

 

With 30 years' experience in law enforcement, operations, safety and physical security, Steve Georgas is considered one of the pre-eminent international experts in security planning and logistics for large-scale public gatherings, sporting events and specialized law enforcement operations. At the Chicago Police Department, Georgas implemented crime-reduction strategies and built partnerships while creating the Targeted Response Unit, was Commanding Officer of the Marine and Helicopter Unit, 018th District Commander, Deputy Chief of the Special Functions Division, Deputy Chief of International Relations and Executive Officer for the Bureau of Patrol. While assigned to the Special Functions Division, Georgas oversaw all uniformed specialized units for the department including the Airport Law Enforcement Unit, Public Transportation Section, SWAT, Bomb Squad, Mounted Unit, Traffic Unit and the Detail Unit which handled all of the City's stadiums and arenas. 

 

In 2012 Georgas was the lead architect in developing the department's plan and response for the 2012 NATO Summit, which earned international accolades as the new model for handling large-scale demonstrations and gatherings of world leaders. Georgas also developed and implemented strategic security and event plans for large scale filming in Chicago and some of the nation's other large events which have had overall attendance totaling over 110 million attendees without a single major incident. These events have included Chicago Marathons, Lollapalooza, Stanley Cup Championship events, World Series victories, NFL Draft, Democratic National Convention and presidential and other VIP security events. As Chief Security Officer for McCormick Place, he oversaw the largest convention and exposition complex in North America, with two five-star hotels and a 10,000-seat arena.

 

Georgas has extensive training from numerous specialized schools and spent time in Israel on an exchange program specializing in Counter Terrorism, the United States Secret Service and Northwestern University. Georgas instructs for the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety & Security (NCS4) at the University of Southern Mississippi. Georgas is providing content overview and instruction for Interpol and Qatar as they prepare for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. 

 

For over 15 years Georgas has been a senior consultant on security and special projects for Levy, a food service provider in over 115 venues and events across North America. Georgas is an ASIS Certified Protection Professional.
